The notion of integration into the society of a target second language has been reconceptualized in recent research on second language (L2) learning. Today, the general consensus is that L2 learners do not abandon their native cultures or languages but instead seek to redefine their identity in a new language and environment.
Our research interests lie in understanding how L2 learning experiences and teaching practices influence a learner’s identity and sense of belonging to the target language community. We study how these dynamic factors relate to one’s motivation to learn and attitudes toward the target language.
We hope to contribute to L2 pedagogy in ways that foster language learners’ cultural awareness, receptivity and civic competency.
